Piece of Sculpture: an Unexpected Future

Siha Kim

The exhibition Piece of Sculpture includes artwork created by recombining scrap metal (including stainless steel and steel plates left over from laser cutting) and forms taken from different shapes, together with artwork representing an attempt to weave these together with contexts from past artwork and expand them into space.

This all started in 2021 at a space called Art Moment where I produced and exhibited a work titled Blood, Heat, which was based on industry characteristics in the region of Seoul’s Geumcheon District. While I was engaging in related research, I happened to encounter waste metal from various industries. As I looked at these unused scraps—waste material—that I discovered at waste processing facilities for metal materials and the metal laser factory that I often visited, I found myself fascinated by their meanings and shapes. I ended up using them as a basis for my works Blood, Heat (2021, Art Moment), Piece of Sculpture (2022, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art), and piece of sculpture (2023, all time space).

In the past, I had used metal for transformation: through fire, through cutting and hammering, and through pouring into molds. Now I began perceiving it as a flexible material with physical qualities that I could control somewhat after the industrialization process—by cutting it like paper or bending it so that its corners stood up. Rapid advancements in polishing and metallurgy in the wake of World War II contributed in art history to the emergence of a flood of iron-based sculpture. Today, the use of iron and various other metals is quite commonplace. Nevertheless, metal retains a certain solidity and firmness that is separate from the flexibility of its processing. In today’s society, metals have become easier to handle thanks to things like lasers and CNS processing, which have rendered them more schematic and design-oriented. But because of these characteristic qualities, there are inevitably strong design elements in the materials left over after cutting according to designs. Apart from cases that involve molds, it becomes difficult to disrupt the assemblage aspect or constructivist framework. But just as the boundary between “used” and “not used” is decided by the thin line of a laser needle, there is also a very thin boundary where the materials that once abounded in sculpture take on a different context in the contemporary era. That boundary is what I sought to disrupt.

I attempted to “stack” meanings through context and connections with previous works. With the creation of “pieces” that exist for the sake of sculpture yet also represent the “useless” things that arise when other things are classified as “useful”—parts of sculpture that are also disconnected pieces—it takes on the ironic quality of creating confusion rather than clarity. Around these artworks in their different forms, I arranged various chair blocks to serve both as support structures for the sculptures and as a way of altering the space. In the process, and without any gesture or performance, the viewer walks inside rather than observing from the periphery, so that the still gallery setting becomes a kind of stage. The idea is to expand the art and achieve a theatrical quality by encompassing the perceptions of the viewer beyond the stage—their thoughts and feelings.

This is an exploration of spatiality as it proceeds from the material to the non-material. By presenting sculptures in liminal forms between “useless” and “useful,” I am accentuating the useless so that the viewer imagines its use. In doing so, I am incorporating all the unknown realms that we might encounter in the future, drifting among the installations that tie together the two worlds that these liminal sculptures create.
